About the Artist

Thota Vaikuntam is a renowned Indian contemporary artist, born in 1942 in Burugupalli, Telangana. His artistic practice is deeply rooted in the rural life, traditions and cultural heritage of Telangana. He studied at the College of Fine Arts and Architecture in Hyderabad and later pursued Painting and Printmaking at Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, under the guidance of K. G. Subramanyan.

Vaikuntam is particularly known for his powerful depictions of Telangana’s rural communities, especially women dressed in traditional saris and jewellery. His inspiration comes from village life, folk traditions, festivals, theatre and childhood memories.

Over the course of his career, Vaikuntam has received several honours, including the Bharat Bhavan Biennale Award and the National Award for Painting in 1993. His work has been exhibited widely in India and internationally, establishing a distinctive visual language rooted in Telangana’s cultural identity.
